Resisting Evil: Teaching & Radical Change

Social studies educators teach about revolutions and resistance movements from the past, and this session focuses on how students might evaluate these events (or their components) as helpful or not. By weaving together three different conceptsβ€”Symbolic Evil (Jean Baudrillard), Truth Procedures (Alain Badiou) and Radical Love (bell hooks)β€”educators can provide not only another lens to understand the past, but also a way to think about radical change in our own contexts. This session will apply these concepts to historical examples of radical change that are commonly taught in secondary social studies curriculum (e.g., underground resistance in occupied territories during WWII), and then explore contemporary movements that have potential for radical change.
