"Students with good phonological awareness are in a great position to become good readers." -D. Kilpatrick (2016) In this session, educators will have an understanding of the foundation of learning to read. Information from the National Reading Panel (2000) will be explored as well as Hollis Scarborough's Reading Rope (2001).Specifically, this session will provide information about phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonemic proficiency and their roles in word-level reading.Tools to evaluate these critical skills will be presented, including models of data collection and how to use the data to guide teaching practice. Ideas for universal classroom supports will be presented. Educators will leave this session with: a) an understanding of the role of phonemic proficiency as it relates to word level reading b) a tool to evaluate phonemic awareness c) evidence-based, research informed resource options ready for classroom implementation.
