This talk presents a dynamic array of teacher images from the media landscape and shows how they present the profession. It explains how these narratives affect the teacher identities of mid-career and pre-service teachers, as well as student expectations and levels of public support. The analysis draws on recent research to explain what is inspiring, worrisome, funny, and professionally useful about different types of teacher characters. And the talk suggests ways of co-opting teacher images to advocate for classrooms, gain political support, and enhance community relations. Since the talk presents a high number of images and video clips accompanied by audio, it is ideally suited to a socially distanced video delivery, if necessary, and would easily avoid the underwhelming effect of extended "talking head" formats.
