Council of School Counsellors (CSC)

The Council of School Counsellors (CSC) of the Alberta Teachers’ Association provides leadership and support to counsellors in effecting comprehensive counselling programming that meets the educational, personal/social and career counselling needs of students in Alberta.

Activities
The Council of School Counsellors (CSC) seeks to maintain and improve guidance programs and services throughout Alberta's schools.

To carry out its mandate, the CSC encourages professional development of practicing counsellors, and promotes the liaison of counsellors with other professionals in the helping professions. Much of the work of the Council is done at the regional level and consists of conferences, meetings and liaison with outside agencies.

The Council holds a conference that serves to bring together widely known speakers and practitioners and that affords the opportunity for vital networking. In addition, to promote the profession and to honor those who excel, the Council grants the Murray Jampolsky award annually to an outstanding practicing school counsellor in the province.

Council Objectives
β€’ Lead relevant professional development
β€’ Provide appropriate advocacy
β€’ Facilitate communication

Benefits of Membership
The CSC has a reciprocal agreement with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).
Any professional development opportunities of the CCPA can be accessed at membership costs for CSC members.

Volunteering
There are volunteer positions available in both our regional executives and our provincial executive. If you have questions regarding eligibility for volunteering, please call the ATA Professional Development program area at Barnett House, 1-800-232-7208 (toll free in Alberta).

Conference and miniconference
The annual CSC Provincial conference is held every two years, and the miniconference is held every odd
year. Prominent keynote speakers and a variety of workshop leaders provide information and motivation to
delegates. A key function of the conference is to provide opportunities for colleagues, presenters and friends
to interact.

Awards
Honorary lifetime membership awards are presented to persons who have contributed significantly to guidance and counselling in Alberta.

In honour of the late Murray Jampolsky, an annual award is made to an outstanding practising school counsellor in the province. Information on submission of nominations for this award is available from the CSC staff advisor at Barnett House. Both awards are presented at the annual conference.

Regional Councils
Much council work is done at the regional level. Conferences, dinner meetings, liaison with outside agencies and other activities that meet the needs of the immediate area are carried out. As a member of the CSC,
you automatically become a member of a regional council. By becoming involved in your regional council, you can provide input into local professional activities and advocate for guidance and counselling programs in schools.
