English Language Arts Council (ELAC)

The English Language Arts Council of the Alberta Teacher’ Association supports and promotes teachers’ professional development in English Language Arts and advocates promising practices and positive conditions to foster student learning.

Objectives
The English Language Arts Council (ELAC) believes that students explore and explain their inner and outer worlds through language and that the role of the teacher is to enhance each student's learning in the language arts. To facilitate this, the Council strives to improve language arts teaching at all levels.

Activities
The ELAC encourages members to share ideas in order to become better informed about current practices in teaching language arts. Thus, the Council acts as a liaison with regional councils throughout the province as well as with national and international organizations, such as the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). ELAC provides opportunities for learning and implementing classroom strategies as well as information about evolving technology. In addition, ELAC provides a forum for the expression of concerns and ideas related to English language arts.
