Matthew Sauer
A Conversations With the Black Teachers' Association
Born and raised in Calgary, Matt Sauer has been teaching High School ELA in the Calgary Catholic School District for 13 years. His father of German descent was also born in Calgary while his mother moved to Calgary with her family from Trinidad. He has always gravitated to his West Indian culture and heritage. Matt has always been focussed on infusing marginalized voices in his classroom, reading literature from all around the world and from different groups of people. He encourages students to always use their voice and be proud of who they are. A father, football coach and facilitator of the school's LBGTQ+ and Spoken Word Clubs, Matt is an active member of the school community, and thoroughly enjoys working with students in a variety of areas.
